Terriers Drop 2-1 Overtime Decision To Binghamton
October 28, 2004 | Women's Soccer
BINGHAMTON, NY-The Terrier women's soccer team's hopes to win the America East regular-season title suffered a severe blow when it dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime decision to host Binghamton University on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 28.
The loss dropped the Terriers' conference record to 4-3-1 for 13 points. In the meantime, first-place Maine shut out Albany, 4-0, to increase its point total to 18.
B.U., which closes out its regular season on Saturday afternoon with a match at UMBC, is hoping to either finish second and receive a first-round bye in the post-season tournament or finish third or fourth and host a first-round match next Tuesday, Nov. 2.
In Thursday's match against Binghamton, the Terriers, whose overall record is now 12-4-2, took a 1-0 lead at the 34:45 mark when junior Meghann Cook (Melrose, MA) converted a crossing pass from sophomore Lauren Erwin (Orange, CT). Cook's shot beat Binghamton goalkeeper Kristie Bowers for her ninth goal of the season.
The Terriers, who outshot Binghamton, 9-4, in the first half, held the lead until late in the second half. Then, at the 82:35 mark, Binghamton, which outshot the Terriers, 12-5, in the second half, got the equalizer on a goal by Tricia Reed.
That sent the game into overtime, and just 1:16 into the extra session, Lauren Massey, who assisted on Reed's goal, scored on a pass in front and beat B.U. keeper Stephanie Dreyer (New Rochelle, NY).
Dreyer finished the game with six saves, while Bowers had five for Binghamton.
