Women's Tennis Has Strong Showing At Brown Invitational

PROVIDENCE, RI - Terrier junior Aimee Charest reached the finals of the Flight D singles division and then teamed with sophomore Gabrielle Hernandez to win the Flight C doubles to highlight the women's tennis team's performance at the Brown Invitational this past weekend.
The three-day competition was held on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Oct. 1-3. Charest (Somerset, MA) reached the finals of Flight D by posting straight-set victories over Evelyn Stevens of Dartmouth College, 6-3, 6-3, and Anela Dujsic of Rutgers University, 6-4, 6-1. Then, in the finals, she lost to Dartmouth's Megan Zebroski, 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles play, Charest and Hernandez (Palo Alto, CA) lost a total of just 10 games in their three wins. On their way to victory, they defeated Connecticut's Christine Burek and Ashley Petruzzi, 8-4, Colgate's Lindsey Grossman and Jackie Couture, 8-3, and then Dartmouth's Stevens and Catja Carell, 8-3, in the finals.
Also competing in the singles for the Terriers were sophomore Erin Katims (Boca Raton, FL), who was 0-1 in Flight A, but then withdrew due to an injury; junior Laura Ahmes (Sarasota, FL), 1-0 in Flight B, but also had to pull out after day one due to an injury; and freshman Gina Sabatino (Waltham, MA), who was 2-1 as was junior Monica Shepherd (Austin, TX) in Flights B and C, respectively. Others who competed in singles were freshman Laura Stiekema (Amsterdam, The Netherlands), who went 2-1 in the Flight D division; freshman Katie Draganova (Coral Springs, FL), who went 0-1 in Flight E before she pulled out with an injury; and junior Cheri Lapane (Reading, MA), who posted a 2-1 record Flight E. Finally, Hernandez rounded out the singles in Flight E with a 2-1 record. The doubles team of Katims and Ahmes went 1-1, as did Stiekema and Draganova in Flights A and B, respectively. Stiekema also teamed with Lapane to go 1-0. Sabatino and Shepherd recorded a 1-2 record.
The Terriers' next competition will come this weekend when they participate in the USTA National Training Center Invitational in New York, NY.
