Women's Tennis Drops Tough One-Point Decision To Dartmouth
April 3, 2004 | Women's Tennis
HANOVER, NH-The Terrier women's tennis team split the six singles matches against Dartmouth but lost the pivotal point in doubles play as B.U. dropped a tough decision to the nation's 69th-ranked Big Green, 4-3, on Saturday, April 3.
The loss dropped the Terriers' spring record to 10-6, as Dartmouth reversed last year's score against B.U.
Dartmouth kicked things off by sweeping all three doubles matches to earn what proved to be the pivotal point of the match. At number one doubles, Terrier senior captain Lindsey Dynof (Colts Neck, NJ) and sophomore Aimee Charest (Somerset, MA) lost an 8-3 decision to Dartmouth's Ann Scott and Lindsay Winningham. At number two doubles, sophomore Laura Ahmes (Sarasota, FL) and senior Elisa Glas (Irun, Spain) dropped an 8-5 match to Sarah McNally and Kerry Snow. Finally, senior Elena deMendoza (Madrid, Spain) and sophomore Monica Shepherd (Austin, TX) lost their number three doubles match to Jayme Ahmed and Catherine Crandall.
With the Terriers trailing the match, 1-0, Ahmes defeated Snow, 6-3, 6-4, at number five singles to knot the score at 1-1. The Big Green took back the lead when Ahmed defeated Dynof, 6-3, 7-5. It marked the first time in four tries over the years that Ahmed was able to defeat Dynof.
The Terriers then bounced back to even the match score, 2-2, when deMendoza bested Crandall in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
That left the outcome to the three matches still on the court, and all three were in the third set. Dartmouth came away with the first two matches to finish to wrap up the win. At number three singles, Winningham defeated freshman Erin Katims (Boca Raton, FL), who had a 10-match winning streak come to an end with the 7-6, 3-6, 2-6, decision. For the spring season, Katims' singles record is now 19-6. The second match reported was at number four singles where Glass lost to McNally, 3-6, 7-6, 2-6.
The Terriers won the numbers five and six singles matches to account for the final score. Ahmes won her match at number five, 6-3, 6-4, over Snow, while Charest posted a 7-6, 1-6, 6-3 victory at number six over Kelsey Surbaugh.
