April 30, 2004 | Women's Tennis
NEW HAVEN, CT-The top-seeded Terrier women's tennis team began its quest for its 15th America East team title in the past 16 years with a 7-0 win over eighth-seeded University of Albany on Friday, April 30 at the Connecticut Tennis Center in New Haven, CT.
The Terriers won both doubles matches that were contested and five of the six singles matches in straight sets en route to the win. Albany did not have either a number three doubles team nor a number one singles player. As a result, the Terriers had an unopposed win in those two matches.
In doubles play, Terrier head coach Lesley Sheehan shuffled her lineup around so that number one player and senior captain Lindsey Dynof (Colts Neck, NJ) did not play. As a result, the number one team had freshman Erin Katims (Boca Raton, FL) with senior Elisa Glas (Irun, Spain), and they defeated Courtney Michels and Amanda Brown, 8-2.
At number two doubles, senior Elena deMendoza (Madrid, Spain) and sophomore Monica Shepherd (Austin, TX) eliminated Lisa Fund and Erika Van Zandt, 8-0. At number three doubles, sophomore Aimee Charest (Somerset, MA) and freshman Gabrielle Hernandez (Palo Alto, CA) posted an unopposed win.
In singles, Dynof also had an unopposed win at number one, while deMendoza bested Michels, 6-2, 6-3. In the other four singles matches, the Terriers swept to 6-0, 6-0 straight-set victories. At number three, Katims beat Brown, Glas beat Fund at number four, Charest defeated Lewis at number five, and finally Hernandez beat Van Zandt.
The Terriers advance to the semifinals against either New Hampshire or Binghamton at noon on Saturday. If B.U. wins that match, they will play for the conference title on Sunday at noon.
