Lesley Sheehan, who guided this year's Terrier women's tennis team to its 10th straight America East team title and 14th crown in the last 15 years, has been voted the Conference's Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.
On Sunday, May 2nd, the top-seeded Terriers defeated second-seeded University of Maryland, Baltimore County, 4-1, as B.U. continued its dominance over its league foes. Since 1989, the only year the Terriers did not win the league crown was in 1993 when they opted to play in the ECAC Tournament. With the 2004 title, the Terriers are assured of their season continuing at least for one more match in the NCAA Tournament. The first-round matches are scheduled for May 14-16 at a site and against an opponent to be determined. This will be the sixth straight year in which B.U. has earned the Conference's automatic berth to the NCAAs.
For Sheehan, this is the fourth time she has been voted the league Coach of the Year by her peers. Previously, she had been honored in 1989, 1996, and 1999.
With their three wins at the America East Tournament over the weekend-7-0 over Albany in the tournament opener, 4-2 over Binghamton in the semifinals, and 4-1 over the Retrievers in the championship matchup, the Terriers improved their record this season to 15-6.
For Sheehan, who is in her 19th season as the Terrier head coach, this year's record improved her coaching mark to 242-146.
The 2002 College Coach of the Year as selected by USA Tennis New England, Sheehan was an outstanding player during her four-year career at B.U. A 1984 graduate, she compiled a 54-16 mark during her collegiate career. Considered the finest women tennis player ever to compete for the Terriers, she was ranked number one in New England, number two in the East and among the top-40 nationally.
