Women's Soccer Blanks Boston College In Season Opener
August 27, 2004 | Women's Soccer
BOSTON - Sophomore Lauren Erwin scored the game's only goal and Stephanie Dreyer and Christina Reuter combined to stop all eight Boston College shots, as the Terrier women's soccer team opened its season with a 1-0 win on Friday night, August 27, at Nickerson Field.
Erwin (Orange, CT), a member of the America East All-Rookie Team last year, notched her first goal of the season at the 36:13 mark. The ball, which she struck from 12 yards out, found the far right corner of the net, out of the reach of BC goalie Kate Taylor. Sophomore Erica Lee (Oakton, Va.) assisted on the goal. Erwin also led the team in shots with three.
Dreyer (New Rochelle, NY), who got credit for the win, and Reuter (Madison, WI) made the goal stand up against a bigger and more physical BC team.
In the first half, B.U. had four shots on net, converting on Erwin's attempt. While the Eagles had 6 shots, Dreyer let nothing past her, recording four saves in the first 45 minutes of play. B.C.'s best chance came with 30 seconds left of the first half, when they were awarded a free kick. However, it was cleared from the box.
Reuter played the second half and stopped four shots. The second half was a physical one with both teams receiving five fouls. With five minutes remaining in the game, B.C.'s Laura Georges received a yellow card for a reckless foul on Terrier junior Meghann Cook (Melrose, Mass.).
The Eagles' best chance in the second half came when Kristin Goddard shot the ball hard to the lower left corner. However, it was saved on the goal line by defender Susan Marschall (Baton Rouge, La.). B.C. led the game with six corner kicks to two by B.U. Taylor recorded two saves in the BC goal.
"This was a terrific win for us," said Terrier head coach Nancy Feldman. "They are a big strong team in the air, and we battled to make it tough for BC to put the ball in the back of the net.
"We wanted this one badly after they embarrassed us last year," said the coach referring to the Eagles' 3-1 win over the Terriers in the 2003 season opener. "We had marked this as a game we wanted to win.
"I thought we played well in the first half, but lost the tempo in the second half," said the coach. "We sat on the 1-0 lead, and we really can't do that.
"I thought that Lauren had a beautiful goal," said Feldman. "She took the ball from Erica and took a couple of touches. She didn't rush her shot, and she waited until their goalie was out of position, and she put the ball where it had to go. It was a great shot.
"I also thought that Stephanie and Christina looked poised in goal," concluded the coach. "They both gained valuable game experience tonight."
The Terriers' next match is at 1:00 pm on Sunday, August 29 at the University of Massachusetts, while their next home match is at 7:00 pm next Friday, September 3 when they host George Mason.
