Cook's Goal Helps Lead Terriers Past Massachusetts, 2-1
August 29, 2004 | Women's Soccer
AMHERST, MA-Junior Meghann Cook scored her first goal of the season and 11th of her career just 7:40 into the second half to help lead the Terrier women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over host University of Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon, August 29.
The victory improved the Terriers' record to 2-0, as it marked the first time since 1996 that they have opened their season with two straight wins. In 1996, in just their second season as a varsity sport, the Terriers defeated St. Joseph's and Army in the first two matches of the year. B.U. went on to its first six en route to a 14-4-0 record. Since then, the Terriers' best start to start of their year was 1-1.
With wins over Boston College, 1-0, on Friday night, August 27, and UMass on Sunday afternoon, the Terriers are off to an excellent start.
"It is great to be 2-0," said Terrier head coach Nancy Feldman after the UMass win. "This was a tough game today. The weather conditions were tough (92 degrees under sunny skies and high humidity), and it was our second game in three days.
"Meghann did a great job on her goal taking on the UMass defender one-on-one and beating the goalkeeper," said Feldman.
Cook (Melrose, MA), who moved into a tie for 10th place on the University's career goal-scoring list, took a pass sophomore Lauren Erwin (Orange, CT) to start the game-winning play. Cook also picked up an assist on the Terriers' first goal of the afternoon to give her a three-point game. It upped her career point-scoring total to 31, tying her with Rebecca Beyer ('04) for 12th place on the Terriers' all-time list.
"I was also happy with how the team responded with the goal early in the second period," said Feldman.
The Terriers, who had outshot the Minutewomen by a 7-1 margin in the first half, jumped to a 1-0 lead at the 16:17 mark when junior Susan Marschall (Baton Rouge, LA) took a shot that beat UMass keeper Kristin Walker high to the left side. Cook earned the assist on the goal.
It appeared the single goal would hold up through the first half until UMass tied the game on a shot by Britt Canfield that found the far right corner of the goal and eluded the dive of Terrier starting keeper Stephanie Dreyer (New Rochelle, NY).
Statistically, the second half belonged to the Terriers as they outshot the Minutewomen, 12-2, and held a 6-0 edge in corner kicks. For the game, the Terriers held a decided 19-3 advantage in shots and 12-0 lead in corner kicks.
Freshman Christina Reuter (Madison, WI), who played in goal for the Terriers in the second half and did not have any saves, earned the win.
"I just wish we could have done a better job finishing off our chances," said Feldman. "Certainly, it is great to come away from here with a win, and I was very pleased with how Brooke Bingham (Duxbury, MA), Brittany McDonald (Lindenhurst, NY), and Erica Lee (Oakton, VA) played the entire game. They were our rocks out there." The Terriers will be in action next at 7:00 pm on Friday night, September 3 when they host George Mason University.
