October 2, 2005 | Women's Soccer
BOSTON, MASS. - The Boston University women???s soccer team exploded offensively for the first time this season, as the Terriers crushed Vermont 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Nickerson Field. Senior forward Meghann Cook (Melrose, Mass.) scored two goals, while Lauren Erwin (Orange, Conn.) had a goal and an assist to pace the Terriers to their highest-scoring game of the season. BU improved to 6-4-3 overall, 2-0-1 in America East play, while Vermont fell to 5-6, 2-1. The Terriers vaulted into first place in the league standings.
???I was very pleased with the way we came out and got some quick goals,??? said Terrier head coach Nancy Feldman. ???We put some good pressure on them and I thought defensively we were very good and limited Vermont???s scoring chances.???
The first 30 minutes of the game were scoreless, despite BU???s dominance on the offensive end. The Terriers finally broke the ice when Brooke Bingham (Duxbury, Mass.) slid a pass to Erwin at the top of the 18-yard line. Erwin wheeled around and clubbed a right-footed shot that beat Catamount keeper Laura Kissock and nestled in the far left corner of the goal for a 1-0 BU lead.
Less than five minutes later, the Terriers had a breakaway, but Erwin was taken down in the penalty box, and a penalty kick was called. Cook calmly stepped up to take the kick and deposited a shot to the left corner past Kissock to double the Terrier lead to 2-0.
In the 41st minute, BU earned a free kick deep in the Vermont end. Erwin hit the ball to Bingham who in turn slid the ball to Cook inside the penalty box. Cook deeked Kissock and tapped the ball into the open net for the Terriers??? third goal of the half. For the opening 45 minutes, BU held an 11-1 advantage in shots and the Terriers would end up out-shooting Vermont 22-5 on the afternoon.
Junior Stephanie Dreyer (New Rochelle, N.Y.) was solid in goal, despite not facing many tough shots. She ran her unbeaten streak to four straight (3-0-1), improved her overall record to 3-3-1 on the year, and registered her third shutout of 2005. Dreyer is now alone in fourth place on the BU all-time wins list, with 14.
Meanwhile, Cook had her first multi-goal game of the year, and her first since a hat trick last year against Albany. Cook now has team-highs of five goals and 14 points on the season and she is tied with teammate Melissa Shulman (Huntington, N.Y.) for fourth place in school annals with 70 points. Cook is now fifth all-time with 24 career goals, and she is already tied for the school record with 22 assists.
BU returns to the road for its next game, at Albany on Thursday afternoon. Game time is 3 p.m.
