February 5, 2005 | Women's Tennis
BOSTON, MA-The Terrier women's tennis team dropped a tough, hard-fought decision to Columbia, 4-3, at the Track and Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 5, as the outcome wasn't decided until the final match.
With the score tied, 3-3, it came down to the third and final set at number five singles between Terrier junior captain Monica Shepherd and Anna Varney. Shepherd won the first set, 7-5, while Varney kept the match going when she won the second set, 6-3. Then, in the third and deciding set, Varney edged Shepherd, 6-4, to give the Lions the match.
It was one of three singles matches that went three sets to show just how tough the match was.
At second singles, Columbia's Angela Hendry edged the Terriers' Laura Ahmes, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, while the other three-set match was at number three singles where B.U.'s Gina Sabatino defeated Kristen Martinez, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
B.U.'s other singles wins came at number four where Aimee Charest eliminated Marlena Hall in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, and at number six where Katerina Draganova defeated Molly Condit, 6-4, 6-3.
In addition to the wins at numbers two and five, Columbia's other singles victory was at number one where Milena Kachar defeated Erin Katims, 6-0, 6-2.
The Lions started off the match by taking the doubles point by winning all three matches. However, as was the case with the singles play, two of the matches could have gone either way. At number one, Kachar and Hall eked out a 9-8 win over Katims and Ahmes, while, at number three, Murphy and Worsley slipped by Charest and Draganova, 9-7. Finally, at number two, Hendry and Kim defeated Shepherd and Sabatino, 8-3.
With the loss, the Terriers' spring record slipped to a 0-2. They will go after their first victory of the spring on Sunday, Feb. 6, at home against Rutgers.
