Terrier Softball Falls To Albany
April 10, 2005 | Softball
BOSTON - The University at Albany scored nine times in the sixth inning, running away from Boston University in a 14-2 Great Danes' win in America East softball action at the B.U. Softball Field on Sunday, April 10.
B.U. (8-15-1, 2-3 America East) took the early 1-0 lead on a solo homer by sophomore center fielder Chiya Louie (Seattle, Wash.), her team-leading fifth homer of the season.
Terrier freshman starting pitcher Jenna Grapensteter (Bothell, Wash.) also got off to a strong start, no giving up a hit in her first three innings of work. The Great Danes broke through in their half of the fourth frame, as Amber Maisonet scored on an Ashley Rios sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. They took a 3-0 lead after run-scoring base hits by Katrina Dunning and Erika Enocksen.
Meanwhile, Grapensteter's pitching counterpart, Casey Halloran, settled down after the first. She kept the Terriers without a hit in the second, third, and fourth innings.
Albany scored two more runs in the fifth on a deep home run to left center by Kelly Ogden that made the score 5-1 and chased Grapensteter from the game. Sophomore Krysta Peplowski (Albany, N.Y.) came on to strike out Dunning to get out of the inning. With the homer, Ogden tied Albany's school record for career homers with seven.
It was in the sixth that the Great Danes put the game securely in the win column. They scored nine runs on eight hits and two Terrier errors to make it 14-1. The Terriers didn't record the first out in the inning until seven Albany batters appeared and the team scored four runs. Grapensteter re-entered the game midway through the inning but fared no better.
B.U. pushed its second run of the game across in the bottom of the sixth, but it was too little, too late as the game ended via the eight-run rule.
Albany had 15 hits as five Great Danes had multiple-hit games. Busch led them all, going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in. Rios also had three RBI. Junior designated player Erin McDonald (Macon, Ill.) went 2-for-3 for the Terriers.
Halloran (8-4) got the win, going the distance while allowing two earned runs on six hits. Grapensteter (3-1) was charged with the loss after giving up five earned runs and nine hits in five-and-a-third innings.
B.U. next plays a doubleheader at Maine on Tuesday, April 12 at noon.
