BOSTON - Senior shortstop Jamie Haas (Houston, Texas) went 5-for-10 from the plate as Boston University took a pair of games from Harvard at the B.U. Softball Field on Thursday, April 14. Haas had the game-winning hit in a 4-3, eight-inning, game-one victory over the Crimson. The Terriers won game two, 9-3, in a five-inning game called due to darkness.
B.U. improves to 10-15-1, while Harvard drops to 10-14.
GAME ONE - Boston University 4, Harvard 3 (8 innings) Harvard jumped on top, 2-0, in the top of the first on a two-run hit by Danielle Kerper. Harvard starting pitcher Staci Madick had B.U.'s number early in the game, holding the Terriers hitless into the third inning. The Terriers loaded the bases with no outs in the third frame but failed to score.
Harvard added to its lead in the fourth as Kerry Flaherty singled though the left side to score Susie Winkeller to make it 3-0. The Terriers began to cut into the Crimson lead starting in the fifth. Senior left fielder DeKenya Williams (San Diego, Calif.) hit an RBI groundout that allowed Haas to score from third to make it 3-1.
B.U. freshman designated player Tyler Benson (Tucson, Ariz.) led off the last of the seventh with a single down the left field line and senior center fielder Chiya Louie (Seattle, Wash.), who made a pair of run-saving diving catches earlier in the game, tied the game with a two-run blast to straight-away center.
The outcome of the game came down to a controversial play at the plate. Freshman right fielder Molly Gallagher (Reading, Mass.) led off the bottom of the eighth with a single to center and stole second with one out. Haas singled to shallow left field and Gallagher, running for home all the way, met the ball at the plate and was called safe due to catcher interference, giving the Terriers a 4-3, come-from-behind win.
Haas went 3-for-5 at the plate with a run, an RBI, and a stolen base. Sophomore Ashlee Freeman (Northridge, Calif.) got the win, going the distance. She allowed three earned runs on 10 hits while striking out six.
GAME TWO - Boston University 9, Harvard 3 (5 innings) After a hitless first two innings, B.U. jumped all over Harvard starting pitcher Becky Voaklander in the third, scoring four runs on seven hits to take a 4-1 lead.
The next inning, the Terriers added another five scores on five hits and two Crimson errors to push their lead to 9-1 after four innings. The Terrier had six straight hits off Voaklander and relief pitcher Michele McAteer in the inning.
Terrier starter Brittany Detwiler (Souderton, Pa.) was in control in the first four frames. She recorded eight straight outs via the strikeout from the second through the fourth innings.
The Crimson hit a pair of fifth-inning solo home runs to cut the lead to 9-3, but the game was called in the middle of the fifth due to darkness.
Haas was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored in game two. Four other Terriers had multiple-hit games for B.U. Detwiler (4-7) finished with nine strikeouts.
B.U. opens a three-game series at Binghamton on Saturday, April 16 at 1 p.m.
