Softball Completes Sweep Of Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. - B.U. softball swept a doubleheader at Vermont on Monday, April 25. The Terriers won, 7-2, in game one and followed it with a 6-1 victory in game two. The team has now won eight games in a row to improve its record to 18-16-1.
GAME ONE - Boston University 7, Vermont 2
Vermont took an early 1-0 advantage in the first inning on a run-scoring double by Kate Ramsey.
B.U. tied the score in the second inning, using a double steal to plate its run. Junior designated player Erin McDonald (Macon, Ill.) led off the frame with a single to center and was pushed over to second on a sacrifice bunt. Junior first basemen Liz Alley (Aurora, Colo.) walked and a passed ball allowed McDonald to advance to third, giving the Terriers runners on the corners. During the next at bat, Alley attempted to steal second, drawing a throw that allowed McDonald to come in and score.
The Terriers added a pair in the third to go on top 3-1. With two on and two outs, senior left fielder DeKenya Williams (San Diego, Calif.) hit a sharp double to left-center to score a pair.
Senior catcher Jenny Shields (Simi Valley, Calif.) gave the Terriers a three-run cushion in the fourth as she led off the inning with a homer to center.
B.U. would tack on three runs in the seventh to make the final outcome 7-2. Sophomore Ashlee Freeman (Northridge, Calif.) picked up the win (8-8) for her second in as many days against the Catamounts.
GAME TWO - Boston University 6, Vermont 1
The Terriers broke a scoreless tie in the fourth. McDonald led off the inning with a double to left-center, advanced to third on a ground out and came in to score on an error to make it 1-0 in favor of the visitors.
Vermont knotted the score in the fifth, putting together a pair of base hits in the frame. A single up the middle off the bat of Kate Haber made it 1-1.
The Terriers opened the game up with four sixth-inning runs to go on top 5-1. The first six Terrier batters of the inning reached on three singles and three walks. Williams and Jenny Shields each had RBI singles in the inning.
The Terriers would wrap up the scoring in the seventh, adding a run on a McDonald double to left.
Sophomore Brittany Detwiler (Souderton, Pa.) went the distance for B.U, scattering five hits while striking out six. Her record improved to 6-6.
The Terriers are scheduled to open a three-game home series against Maine on Wednesday, April 27 at 2:30 p.m., weather permitting.
