STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Senior shortstop Jamie Haas (Houston, Texas) went 3-for-4 and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Boston University a 1-0 win over the University of Maine in the first round of the America East Softball Championship on Thursday, May 12.
The second-seeded Terriers advance to play top-seeded Albany on Friday, May 13 at 11 a.m. Albany was a 4-3 winner over fourth-seeded Stony Brook University earlier in the day. Maine and Stony Brook play in an elimination game on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
Haas, who won her third America East Player of the Year award yesterday, scored when sophomore center fielder Chiya Louie (Seattle, Wash.) reached on an error by left fielder Dana Grimm.
The Black Bears had base runners in both the eighth and ninth innings, putting two on with two outs in the top of the eighth but failing to score.
Freshman right fielder Tyler Benson (Tucson, Ariz.) led off the Terrier half of the ninth with a double to left field but was later thrown out at the plate trying to score from third on a fielder's choice. Haas would advance to third base on that same play and score on the next at bat.
B.U. sophomore starting pitcher Ashlee Freeman (Northridge, Calif.) won her 10th straight decision, going the distance and allowing five hits while striking out nine Black Bears. She improved to 13-8 on the season.
