Softball Falls To Albany In Winner's Bracket Game

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The University at Albany advanced to the title game of the America East Softball Championship with a 7-3 win over Boston University on Friday, May 13. The Terriers next play an elimination game against Stony Brook at approximately 5:30 p.m.
Kelly Ogden led the way for the Great Danes, collecting two hits and driving in three Albany runs.
The Danes chased the Terriers' sophomore starter Ashlee Freeman (Northridge, Calif.) with three runs in the top of the first inning. Maegan Larson led of with a single to left and Ogden followed with a run-scoring single. Two more Albany runs scored when senior catcher Jenny Shields' (Simi Valley, Calif.) throw to third sailed into the outfield.
B.U. got two back in the bottom of the inning. Senior shortstop Jamie Haas (Houston, Texas) led off the inning with a walk and senior left fielder DeKenya Williams (San Diego, Calif.) did the rest with a two-run homer to left to make the score 3-2 Albany after one inning.
Albany extended its lead to 7-2 in the top of the fourth while batting against Terrier sophomore reliever Brittany Detwiler (Souderton, Pa.). They plated four runs on three hits. Ogden had a two-run double and Ashley Rios followed with a homer to center field, her second home run of the Championship.
The Terriers added a run in the bottom of the fourth on a Jenny Shields RBI double to round out the scoring.
Albany advances to Saturday’s championship game to be played at 12 noon, with a deciding game to follow (if necessary). Boston U. will face the winner of game 4 between Stony Brook and UMBC at 4 p.m. The winner will face Albany in the title game on Saturday.
