STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Boston University was eliminated from the 2005 America East Softball Championship after a 5-4 loss to host Stony Brook on Friday, May 13. The Terriers led, 4-0, entering the sixth inning but could not hold the lead.
B.U., the second seed in the tournament, finishes the season with an overall record of 26-19-1. Fourth-seeded Stony Brook advances to meet Albany in the championship game on Saturday.
The Terriers scored single runs in the top of the first and third innings and added two more in the fifth to take what seemed to be a commanding 4-0 lead. Sophomore center fielder Chiya Louie (Seattle, Wash.) had a sacrifice fly in the first, while senior left fielder DeKenya Williams (San Diego, Calif.) doubled in Louie in the third.
Williams tallied another RBI base hit in the fifth, and junior first baseman Liz Alley (Aurora, Colo.) added a run-scoring single through the right side to make it 4-0 Terriers.
Sophomore pitcher Brittany Detwiler (Souderton, Pa.) gave the Terriers good reason to think they had the edge, holding the Seawolves hitless into the sixth inning.
Stony Brook broke up Detwiler's no-hit bid in the sixth with a pair of base hits and a walk, loading the bases with one out. Freshman Jenna Grapensteter (Bothell, Wash.) came on in relief but provided none as she allowed the next batter, Hayley Durham, to belt a two-run single to right. After a walk, the Seawolves got another run-scoring single to make it 4-3.
Grapensteter struck out the next batter but a run came in via the passed ball, tying the game at 4-4 and keeping the bases loaded. Grapensteter then walked in what turned out to be the game-winning run.
The Terriers went down, 1-2-3, in the top of the seventh to end the game.
