September 29, 2005 | Women's Soccer
ORONO, Maine ??? The Boston University women???s soccer team fought Maine to a 1-1 tie on Thursday afternoon in a game played in a fierce windstorm and featuring driving rain. The Terriers scored early, only to see the Black Bears knot the game in the final seven minutes of regulation. BU is now 5-4-3 overall, 1-0-1 in America East play. Maine is 5-4-1, 0-0-1. the match featured the top two defenses in the league, as BU entered the game having allowed just nine goals in 11 games, while Maine had allowed six goals in nine games.
"We played really well," said BU head coach Nancy Feldman. "The wind was a huge factor and the conditions were horrible. No one was able to dominate territorially but it was a hard fought game."
BU struck rather quickly, as it had the gale-force wind at its back in the first half. Less than 11 minutes into the game, Melissa Shulman (Huntington, N.Y.) rocketed a shot from the top of the 18-yard line that smoked past Maine keeper Tanya Adorno. The goal was the fourth of the season for Shulman and the 29th of her career, tying her for second all-time in goals scored at BU. The Terriers took the 1-0 lead into the halftime locker room, having outshot Maine 10-4 in the opening 45 minutes.
The Black Bears had the advantage of the wind at their backs in the second half, and although they outshot BU 6-2, could not capitalize until late. Forward Laura Harper hit a cross which was intercepted by Terrier keeper Christina Reuter (Madison, Wisc.) in the penalty box. However, Reuter lost her footing, and as she did the ball came free. Black Bear forward Erin Corey was Johnny-on-the-spot, and she scooped the ball up and deposited it in a wide-open net for the tying score. The goal came at the 83:45 mark, as the Terriers were just over six minutes away from preserving the victory.
Neither team could score in overtime, despite numerous chances. BU took five shots and had three corner kicks in the extra sessions, while Maine had six shots and four corners. Reuter ended up with five saves for the game and allowed just her fourth goal in 587 minutes on the year. Jasmine Phillips relieved Adorno in goal for Maine and held BU scoreless, improving her scoreless streak to 350 minutes this season.
The Terriers return home to Nickerson Field to face Vermont on Sunday. Game time is 1 p.m.
