Women's Tennis Falls to Brown, Sweeps UMBC

BOSTON – After coming up short in a close 5-2 battle at Brown on Saturday, the Boston University women’s tennis team came back with a convincing 7-0 sweep of America East rival the University of Maryland Baltimore County at the BU Track & Tennis Center on Sunday to improve to 6-3 on the season. Sophomore Gina Sabatino (Waltham, Mass.) and junior Erin Katims (Boca Raton, Fla.) rotated at Nos. 1 and 2 singles and captured all four matches to lead the Terriers to the weekend split.
In Providence, R.I. on Friday, the rookie pairing of Danielle Abraham (Waukesha, Wis.) and Cori Lefkowith (Clayton, Mo.) posted an 8-4 victory over Brown’s Sara Mansur and Brett Finkelstein in the third doubles slot, but the Bears had already gained the doubles point with wins in the top-two positions.
The Terriers then opened singles play with a pair of wins by Sabatino over Daisy Ames (4-6, 6-3, 6-2) and Katims over Ashley Pariser (7-5, 6-4) to take the 2-1 lead. The Bears bounded back with four-consecutive wins in the bottom four singles match-ups for the 5-2 triumph.
Returning home to the TTC on Sunday, the Terriers got back in the win column with a strong showing versus UMBC. In doubles, the duo of Sabatino and senior co-captain Monica Shepherd took down UMBC’s Ale Pedergnana and Cornelia Carapcea by an 8-2 count, followed by 8-0 wins by Katims and freshman Yana Sadovskaya (Riga, Latvia), and senior Laura Ahmes (Sarasota, Fla.) and Lefkowith.
The dominating Terrier play continued throughout singles, with Katims, Sabatino, Sadovskaya, Ahmes. Lefkowith and Abraham winning their matches at Nos. 1 to 6, respectively, for the 7-0 blanking.
BU hosts Yale on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 10:00 a.m. before hitting the road for the month of March to see action in Florida, Alabama and the Carolinas.
