April 20, 2006 | Softball
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College pitcher Savanna Lloyd allowed just one earned run and fanned five in five innings as the Eagles defeated the Boston University softball team 5-2 Thursday afternoon. BC swept the two-game season series from the Terriers, including a 7-4 win at BU on Mar. 30. The Terriers lost for the fifth time in their last six games and fell to 20-22 on the season. B.C. improved to 17-21.
BU took an early lead, scoring an unearned run in the first inning off Lloyd. Christy Leath walked and went to third on Brandi Shields’ single. Leath then cruised home when Eagle center fielder Carly McNary threw the ball into the Terrier dugout trying to nail her at third.
The Terriers maintained their 1-0 lead until the bottom of the second when BC tallied twice off starter Shayne Lotito. The Eagles increased their lead to 4-1 an inning later when catcher Ashley Obrest belted a two-run home run to left.
The Terriers trailed 5-1 entering the fifth when they tallied again. Lotito slapped a double down the left field line and came around to score on Tyler Benson’s RBI single, drawing BU to within 5-2.
The Terriers continued to rally in the top of the seventh against Eagle reliever Brandi Thompson. Lotito hit a one-out double and advanced to third on a Benson single. Christy Leath came up representing the tying run, but grounded out to short. Shields then fouled out to third to end the Terrier threat and the game.
Lotito (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs on three hits in 2.1 IP. Brittany Detwiler was solid in relief, allowing just one run on two hits in 3.2 IP. Lloyd (7-6) earned the win for BC.
Lotito led the BU offense, going 3-4 with a run scored. Benson was 2-4, as the Terriers out-hit the Eagles 8-5.
BU returns to action Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m., when it hosts Binghamton in a doubleheader.
