Detwiler Pitches Terriers Past Brown
April 27, 2006 | Softball
BOSTON – Junior Brittany Detwiler fired a complete game five-hitter and won for the first time in over a month as the Boston University softball team defeated Brown 4-1 Thursday afternoon. The Terriers, who improved to 23-24 overall, won for the third time in their last four games and finished the season 12-5 at home. Brown, which had won five of six, fell to 18-25.
Detwiler had not won since a 12-0 shutout over Holy Cross on Mar. 26. Against the Bears, however, she took a no-hitter into the fourth inning, and ended up with six strikeouts in her most dominating performance since returning from a high ankle sprain on Apr. 12. Detwiler missed eight games while injured.
BU gave her some early offense, scoring a pair of runs in the third inning. Meghan Coughlin, starting at first base in place of an injured Liz Alley, led off the frame with a single. Molly Gallagher was hit by a pitch, and three batters later Tyler Benson singled home Coughlin. Christy Leath delivered Gallagher from third with an RBI single, giving BU a 2-0 lead.
The Terriers doubled their advantage on one swing of the bat in the fifth. Brooke Hudson led off with a triple and Shayne Lotito belted her first career home run to right center field. The blast gave BU a 4-0 cushion, more than enough for Detwiler to work with.
Detwiler’s only blemish came in the sixth, when she allowed a solo home run to Kelsey Wilson. Brown’s first two batters reached in the seventh, and with one out, Rachel Fleitell hit a sinking liner to right. Terrier outfielder Josie Mendez came sprinting in and snared the drive for the second out, preserving two runs in the process. Mary Seid grounded out to end the game, as BU finished the season 5-1 at home against non-conference opponents.
Coughlin went 2-3, as the Terriers rapped out seven hits. Center fielder Kari Best was 2-3 in a losing cause for Brown.
BU returns to the diamond this weekend when it visits Albany for a key three-game America East series. The Terriers and Great Danes will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m., and a single game Sunday at noon. BU is currently in fourth place in the league standings, one-half game ahead of fifth-place Stony Brook. The top four teams qualify for the America East postseason tournament.
