Game Two Box Score
STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Boston University softball team was swept in a doubleheader at Stony Brook Saturday afternoon. The Terriers dropped game one 13-1 and lost game two 12-3. BU fell to 25-27 overall, 10-10 in the America East, while the Sea Wolves improved to 25-24, 10-9. The setbacks mean that BU must defeat Stony Brook Sunday afternoon to clinch a bid to the America East Tournament next weekend in Maine. The top four teams qualify for the event. Maine, Albany and UMBC are already in, while BU and Stony Brook are fighting for the final spot.
In game one, the Terriers jumped on top 1-0 when Brandi Shields hit a solo home run leading off the second inning. The advantage was short-lived, however, as the Sea Wolves stormed back with three runs in the bottom of the frame off Terrier starter Cassidi Hardy. Hardy walked Sea Wolf center fielder Lisa Turek, before Sara Cerrone hit a two-run home run.
Stony Brook added four runs in the third inning, as Cerrone belted a three-run home run to give the Sea Wolves a 7-1 advantage. The Seawolves closed things out in the fourth with six runs, as BU managed just one hit in its final three at-bats.
Hardy (14-10) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on four hits in 2.1 IP. She walked three and fanned one. Melody Popravak tossed the final 1.2 innings, allowing seven runs on five hits. Offensively, BU was led by Shields, who was 1-2 and hit her second home run of the season. Freshman 3B Brooke Hudson was 1-2 for the Terriers as well. Cerrone was 2-3 with five RBI to pace Stony Brook.
In game two, the Terriers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Tyler Benson drew a one-out walk and Christy Leath swatted her fourth home run of the season. Stony Brook drew even in the bottom of the frame when a Jodi Durham triple off Brittany Detwiler plated two and knotted the game at 2-2.
Stony Brook proceeded to take command with a six-run third inning to take an 8-2 lead. Marissa Fleury had the big blow, a three-run home run off Detwiler. BU got one run back in the fourth on Liz Alley’s eighth home run of the season, but the Sea Wolves ended the game with four runs in the fifth. Kelsi Fanelli hit a three-run home run to give Stony Brook a 12-3 lead, which invoked the eight-run mercy rule.
Detwiler (9-10) pitched a complete game for BU, allowing 11 earned runs on 10 hits in 4.1 IP. She walked none and fanned four. The Terrier offense managed just two hits, the home runs by Shields and Alley.
The final game of the series is 12 p.m. Sunday, with a berth in the America East Tournament at stake for the winner.
