September 12, 2006 | Softball
BOSTON – Jennifer Deering, a member of the 2002 National Championship softball team at UC-Berkeley, has joined the softball coaching staff at Boston University as announced by head coach Shawn Rychcik. Most recently, Deering served as the head varsity softball coach at Piedmont High School, in Piedmont, Calif.
“We are excited to have Jen joining our staff,” said head coach Shawn Rychcik. “It is rare for any program to hire a coach onto its staff that has a NCAA National Championship on her resume. Jen had an outstanding playing career at Cal and is eager to continue her coaching career here at BU. She brings a lot of coaching experience having coached at the college, high school and travel ball level.”
In her first season at the helm, Deering led the 2006 Piedmont softball team to its first Bay Side Athletic League championship in thirteen years. The team also earned its first-ever North Coast Sectional first-place seeding. Deering was named the “East Bay Coach of the Year” by the Oakland Tribune after the team went 19-4 in her tenure.
In addition to her responsibilities as the head coach at Piedmont, Deering founded the U-18 Gold Division, an elite summer travel team, from 2005-06.
Prior to her appointment at Piedmont, Deering was an assistant softball coach at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif. While at St. Mary’s, Deering was responsible for evaluating talent and recruiting athletes, as well as scouting opponents and coordinating the condition and training of its athletes.
A former pitcher at UC-Berkeley, Deering was a member of the 2002 NCAA national championship team that defeated Arizona 6-0. In four years, Deering compiled a 53-5 record in 78 appearances. A multi-sport athlete at Berkeley, Deering was also a member of the UC-Berkeley women’s basketball team during the 2000-01 season, playing in 15 games as a freshman.
Deering’s responsibilities as an assistant at Boston University will include working with the pitching staff and spearheading BU’s recruiting efforts.
