Women's Tennis Opens Season at Gopher Invitational

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Boston University women’s tennis team opened its fall schedule at the Gopher Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota on Sept. 15-17. The team turned in a successful weekend, placing five singles players and three doubles teams in the top five in their respective flights.
In singles action, freshman Rebecca Row (Austin, Texas) picked up her first collegiate championship, defeating Gonzaga’s Kristen MacWilliam in the finals of the Gopher flight. Row had a strong run in the flight, winning three matches in straight sets, while blanking opponents, 6-0, in four of six sets. Gabrielle Hernandez (Palo Alto, Calif.) placed fourth in the flight after splitting sets and losing 10-5 in a tiebreaker to third-place finisher, Jennifer Barnes (Iowa).
Similarly, Elizabeth Corrao (Holden, Mass.) picked up a fourth-place finish in the Minnesota flight. Corrao won her first two matches in straight sets before losing the next two matches the same way. She was the lone Terrier to place in the flight.
Cori Lefkowith (Clayton, Mo.) went 3-1 in the Gold flight, including a 2-6, 6-3, (10-6) comeback victory over Missouri's Chrissy Sveylic to take third place.
Rounding out the singles were Erin Katims (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Yana Sadovskaya (Riga, Latvia) who both defeated third-seeded Hilary Mintz of Iowa and eventually placed fifth and seventh, respectively, in the Maroon flight.
In doubles, BU took home both a second- and a third-place finish on the weekend. Corrao and Hernandez were runners-up in the Star Doubles flight after a loss to champions Danielle Mousseau and Mariana Splica of Minnesota ,8-3. The team defeated a Wichita State tandem, 9-8, in a hard-fought battle on Saturday to advance to the finals on Sunday. In the same flight, Row and Sadovskaya took home fifth place after blanking Minnesota’s Karina Chiarelli and Jackie Sperling, 8-0.
The Terriers placed two doubles teams in the North Doubles Flight, with partners Lefkowith and Katims taking home the third-place finish after a close 8-6 victory over Missouri’s Kaitlin Dunham and Chrissy Svetlic. Danielle Abraham (Waukesha, Wis.) and Katarina Draganova (Coral Springs, Fla.) finished eighth in the flight after a tough loss to Dalmacio and Hanisch of WSU in the seventh-place match.
Overall, the team compiled a 21-11 singles record and 11-5 doubles record. Next, the team will travel to Pacific Palisades, Calif., where it will compete in the All-American Tournament hosted by Stanford University.
