BOSTON - Seniors Brooke Hudson and Christy Leath have been named the 2009 softball co-captains, as announced by head coach Shawn Rychcik Thursday. Over their three years at BU, Hudson and Leath have been a part of a successful class that has recorded a 92-66 overall record and won the conference's regular-season title in 2007.
Leath, who last year earned America East All-Conference Second Team honors, broke a single-season record for walks (37), while also moving up in the record books for career hits (140), home runs (14) and RBI (90). She now ranks third all-time in walks (78), seventh in batting average (.313) and eighth in slugging percentage (.462).
"Christy was one of our captains last year and did a real nice job," Rychcik said. "She is a real 'lead-by-example' player and as a second-year captain she will be asked to take on a bigger role in guiding this team. As a senior she has a lot of experience and should provide the leadership we need on and off the field."
Hudson had her best season at the plate last year, batting a career-high .247 to go along with 37 hits, one triple, 17 RBI and a team-high 12 doubles, which also ranked second in the conference.
"Brooke emerged last year as a one of the leaders on the team," continued Rychcik. "As a senior she took the role of leader long before being appointed captain. The team looks to her and will follow her throughout the year. She has really earned the respect of the squad and will provide the leadership we need."
The Terriers will begin their 2009 campaign at the San Jose State Tournament from Feb. 27 to March 1, where they will face host San Jose State and Sacramento State in the three-day tourney.
