TAMPA, Fla. - The Boston University softball team split on its final day at the USF Spring Invitational, earning a 4-0 victory over Indiana before falling to host USF, 7-2, on Wednesday afternoon in Tampa, Fla. Sophomore hurler Cassidi Hardy threw a complete-game shutout against the Hoosiers with six strikeouts to improve to 3-2 in the circle. BU stands at 5-9 on the young season and will compete at the Under Armour tournament in Clearwater, Fla., beginning on Friday, March 14.
The offense put up four runs in the fourth and Hardy took over from there, pitching a complete-game shutout with six strikeouts, two walks and four hits in the 4-0 victory over Indiana. The Terriers broke a scoreless deadlock in the fourth frame when junior Christy Leath's single up the middle drove in freshman April Setterlund and two at-bats later with the bases loaded sophomore Rachel Hebert brought home junior Shayne Lotito when she drew a walk. Junior Nora Militz and freshman Melanie Delgado tacked on two more insurance runs in the inning.
With the four-run cushion, Hardy took the reins, allowing just two hits over the final three innings and retiring the Hoosiers in order in the seventh.
The Terriers faced host USF, who was receiving votes in the most recent ASA national poll, in their final game of the tourney and dropped a 7-2 decision. Delgado drove in a run in the seventh and sophomore Megan Currier threw six innings, but fell to 1-4 pitchers' circle with four earned runs and two walks.
The Bulls put three on the board early with runs in the first and second, before the Terriers spoiled pitcher Capri Catalano's no-hitter when Lotito singled up the middle and junior Melissa Dubay doubled through the left side. On the next at-bat, Leath crossed home after a wild pitch. USF tacked on three more in the sixth and one in the seventh, before Delgado plated Dubay to round out the scoring at 7-2.
BU will remain in Florida when they compete in the Under Armour Classic in Clearwater, Fla., from March 14-16. They will open the tournament with games against Liberty and Chattanooga at 1:00 and 4:00 p.m.
