BOSTON - On Thursday, May 15, Boston University softball player Molly Gallagher will receive a Scarlet Key given to graduating seniors in honor of their service to the BU community. The Scarlet Key is one of BU's highest academic honors and is handed out annually at a Tapping Ceremony in the George Sherman Union's Metcalf Hall.
The Scarlet Key Awards acknowledge the curricular and extracurricular achievements of the students who are nominated. Scarlet Key recipients are nominated by faculty and staff and are evaluated in five areas: leadership, commitment, representation, tradition and academics. This year 45 students will receive the prestigious accolade.
Gallagher, who recently completed her collegiate career with the Boston University softball team, was an outfielder on a squad that earned four consecutive America East tournament berths and one regular-season title. This past season Gallagher, a co-captain, hit two home runs and drove in eight runs. She swiped seven bags in 2008, bringing her career total to 38 - fifth all-time in program history.
The Reading, Mass., native will graduate from the College of Communication with a 3.30 GPA as a journalism major.
In addition to her athletic and academic accomplishments, Gallagher has also been recognized for her extracurricular activities. At the Athletics Department's annual banquet, Gallagher received the Boston University Student-Athlete Service Award for her commitment to serving BU, the Athletics Department and the Boston community. In addition to working with the Student-Athlete Advisory-Committee (SAAC), she has volunteered her time with the Massachusetts Lung Association, the Home for Little Wanderers and the Newton Special Athletes track team. Last summer, she spent six weeks documenting the life and culture of low-income Dublin residents when she studied abroad in Ireland.
