ALBANY, N.Y. - The second-seeded Boston University softball team (29-23, 15-6 AE) fell to No. 4 UMBC (15-28, 12-9 AE), 5-3, on Friday afternoon on the second day of the 2008 America East Championship. Freshman Melanie Delgado drove in two runs and classmate April Setterlund recorded an RBI in the loss.
Delgado was 2-for-3 in the batter's box, while senior Tyler Benson and juniors Brooke Hudson, Christy Leath, Melissa Dubay and Shayne Lotito collected hits for the Terriers. Sophomore Cassidi Hardy (14-8) was charged with loss surrendering five runs on eight hits and striking out two batters. Sophomore Megan Currier pitched the final inning and a half and allowed two hits, while striking out one batter.
The Terriers started out the game aggressively, putting runners on second and third by the third at-bat on Leath's sacrifice bunt; however, UMBC's defense managed to hold them there forcing a fly out and strikeout to end the inning. The Retrievers responded in the bottom of the frame on a two-run long ball to left field to take the early lead.
In the fourth, the Terriers loaded the bases and then knotted the score at two when Delgado singled through the left side. Two at-bats later, sophomore Rachel Moeller scored on a sacrifice fly out to take the 3-2 advantage. In the bottom of the fourth, the Retrievers loaded the bases and UMBC's Dana Shepard drove the tying run in on infield single.
The Retrievers reclaimed the lead for good in the fifth on a single into center field that plated two to move the score to 5-3. In the top of the seventh, UMBC hurler Stephanie Weigman forced back-to-back fly outs to secure the victory.
BU finishes the season with a 29-23 overall record and 15-6 conference mark. Junior Brooke Hudson and freshman Melanie Delgado were named to the All-Championship team following the conclusion of the tournament.
