San Jose, Calif. - The Boston University softball team opened its 2009 campaign splitting its doubleheader with San Jose State on Friday in SJSU's Super Series. After falling, 6-4, in the first game, the Terriers responded with a 3-1 win in game two. In BU's victory, senior Melissa Dubay provided the heroics, driving in freshman Erica Casacci in the fifth. Junior hurler Megan Currier went the distance in the circle to earn the two-run triumph.
In the second game, sophomore Caitlin Rentler went 3-for-3 in the batter's box, while Dubay and classmate Shayne Lotito drove in runs in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively. Currier, in her first appearance of the season, struck out four batters, and allowed just four hits and one earned run.
BU opened the game with an unearned run, capitalizing on an error at third that allowed Lotito to make her way home, after reaching on a walk and advancing to second on a stolen base. In the bottom half of the inning, the Spartans knotted the game at one with their lone run of the contest on a single to center field.
Four innings later, Dubay drove in the game-winning run on a double to left field that plated Casacci, who just two at-bats earlier had earned her first career hit. The Terriers added an insurance run in the sixth, when Rentler hit a two-out single to center field and junior Rachel Moeller and senior Nora Militz drew back-to-back walks that loaded the bases. On the next at-bat, Lotito drew the third straight walk that drove in freshman Kayla Kruper - a pinch runner for Rentler.
In the bottom of the seventh, Currier struck out two and a ground out put the game away.
In the Terriers' 6-4 loss, sophomore April Setterlund was 2-for-4, while Moeller knocked in two runs. Freshman Emily Roesch collected her first hit and first RBI with a double to center field in the sixth inning that tied the game, 4-4, at the time; however, the Spartans came back to score two more in the bottom half of the frame.
BU returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 28) in a rematch with San Jose State at 3 p.m. and a match-up with Sacramento State at 5 p.m.
