Clearwater, Fla. - The Boston University softball team (12-6) dropped a pair of games on Saturday afternoon on the second day of the USF Under Armour Showcase. In the first outing, the Terriers fell by a 9-3 margin to Long Island and followed it up with a 5-1 loss to Long Island.
In game one, junior Rachel Moeller and sophomore April Setterlund each recorded two hits, while Moeller went deep in the fourth inning for the first time this season. However, a four-run second inning by Jacksonville and a three-run sixth frame gave the Blackbirds enough of a cushion to hold on for the victory. Sophomore Kelley Engman was charged with the loss in the circle as she falls to 2-2 on the season.
In the second game, senior Shayne Lotito went 2-for-4 with one RBI, while classmate Nora Militz was 1-for-3 with one RBI as well. Lotito's solo long ball in the first frame got things started on the right foot for the Terriers, however, the Dolphins plated three in the second and two more in the third to take a four-run lead into the seventh inning.
In the final frame, BU attempted a rally when Militz homered to right field, however, the Dolphin's defense didn't allowe a runner past first to seal the victory. Junior Cassidi Hardy (5-2) went the distance in the loss, striking out five batters and allowing five runs on seven hits.
BU will face George Washington on Sunday (March 15) at 10 a.m. on the final day of the USF Under Armour Showcase.
