Starkville, Mo. - Three Boston University softball players were named to the 2009 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Northeast Region Team, the association announced on Thursday. Junior pitcher Cassidi Hardy, senior outfielder Shayne Lotito and sophomore outfielder April Setterlund were rewarded for their play during the 2009 campaign, which continues on Friday (May 15) when they take on Georgia Tech in the NCAA Atlanta Regional at 7:30 p.m.
Hardy, whose name is already etched in school record books for career appearances (1st, 111), innings pitched (1st, 658.0), complete games (2nd, 69), shutouts (3rd, 24) and strikeouts (4th, 545), owns a 1.40 ERA and 25-5 record in 2009. She was named to the America East All-Conference Second Team and then pitched all three games for BU in the conference tournament, where the squad won its seventh conference crown. The Jupiter, Fla., native pitched every inning during the AE tourney, finishing the weekend with a 1.27 ERA and 10 strikeouts to earn the Most Outstanding Player recognition.
In her final year, Lotito is having her best season yet, batting a career-high .354 with six home runs, 30 RBIs and a single-season record 36 stolen bases. Lotito owns career marks for swiped bags (94), runs (148) and at-bats (706). One of the most accomplished players in the program's history, Lotito ranks in the top 10 in three additional categories: career hits (2nd, 235), home runs (4th, 18) and doubles (T-7th, 27). Lotito was an America East All-Conference Second Team honoree at season's end.
Setterlund, an America East All-Conference First Team selection, boasts a conference-best .405 batting average with 15 doubles - a BU single-season record - to go along with seven home runs and 26 RBIs. She ranks 14th in the nation in two-baggers and is third in the league in hits (64).
The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and all the honorees will now be eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second or third teams. In addition, conference pitchers and players of the year not selected to the regional teams were added for All-America consideration.
