CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Freshmen Jacinda McLeod and Nicole van Oosterom each scored twice, including their first collegiate goals, to help the Boston University field hockey team post a convincing 7-0 shutout victory over Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon at Jack Barry Field. The Terriers improve to 2-5 on the year and will visit Dartmouth on Sunday (Sept. 20) for a 3 p.m. contest.
Five different players scored for BU, as junior Allie Dolce and senior co-captains Nikki Lloyd and Haley Robinson had one goal each. Dolce added three assists and McLeod earned a helper, as the two each posted a game-high five points. Robinson had a pair of assists for a four-point day.
BU was efficient on its corners, scoring on six of its 10 on the day. The Terriers recorded 27 shots in the game and did not allow any on the other end. Junior Amanda Smith and redshirt freshman Julie Collins combined for the shutout in goal.
The Terriers scored on their first corner of the game, as McLeod drove home a shot from the top of the circle on assists from Robinson and Dolce to earn the first goal of her BU career.
Just under four minutes later, a shot by Lloyd clanged off the right post and Dolce gathered the rebound in front before pushing a second effort past Sacred Heart netminder Kim Stow.
BU gave itself a 3-0 cushion with just 25 seconds left in the opening half, as van Oosterom took a direct insert on the left side of the circle from junior Maryette Stuart on a corner and sent the ball towards the the far post, where it went off a defender's stick and in.
The Terriers quickly doubled their lead in the second half, scoring three goals in the first five minutes after the break.
Lloyd made it 4-0 off a corner at 36:10 when she sent in a perfectly placed drag flick from the top left of a circle to the top right corner of the goal off a slip from McLeod.
BU converted off another corner just 92 seconds later, as Robinson took a direct insert from Dolce on the right side and drilled a shot to the boards for her first tally of the season.
Van Oosterom capped her two-goal day with a shot from the left side on a corner at 39:52, while McLeod matched her fellow New Zealand native's effort with 6:36 left in regulation when she took a pass from Robinson just inside the circle on the left side and drove it to back of the net.
BU will return to action on Sunday (Sept. 20) when it travels to Hanover, N.H., to face Dartmouth. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
