BOSTON - Facing off against its second-consecutive ranked Ivy League opponent, the Boston University women's tennis team played hard but eventually fell to No. 48 Yale, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Tennis and Track Center. Senior Francine Whu and sophomore Monika Mical each earned singles victories, as the Terriers dropped to 0-2 on the young season.
Beset by injuries, the Terriers were already missing a senior and junior before Sunday but then had to retire in two separate singles matches against the Bulldogs for the loss.
Yale earned a sweep in doubles for the first point and then quickly grabbed two more, as Jessi Linero and Stefanie Nunic each retired in their respective matches. Yale's Sarah Lederhandler defeated Inayat Khosla, 6-2, 6-2, for the fourth point, and Stevi Petrelli defeated Petra Santini, 6-1, 6-3, for the fifth.
Both Francine Whu and Monika Mical each won their first sets and came in the third set tiebreakers to give BU two points on the day. Whu defeated Jessica Rhee, 6-4, 1-6, 10-6 at No. 2, and Mical knocked off Lindsay Clark, 6-2, 3-6, 10-5.
The Terriers will next travel to the University of Miami for the second-annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Terriers will first face the No. 7 Hurricanes on Sat., Jan. 30 and then face either No. 53 South Alabama or Mississippi State on Sunday. The leaving Coral Gables, Fla., with two wins will advance to the 16-team ITA Indoor Championship two weeks later.
