BOSTON - Head coach Shawn Rychcik and the Boston University softball team are pleased to announce the signing of two student-athletes, who will join the program for the 2012 season. Emily Felbaum and Amanda Fernandez have signed their Letters of Intent to join the Terriers next year.
Felbaum, a native of Grafton, Mass., and former high school teammate of current Terrier Jayme Mask, was a three-time Southern Worcester County League All-Star while at Grafton. The squad made it to the quarterfinals twice and as a sophomore she helped lead the team to the semifinals. Felbaum is also a member of the Rhode Island Thunder Gold Travel Team, coached by Dave Lotti and Bob Rossi.
"Emily comes from the best travel ball program in the area," said Rychcik. "She fits into my recruiting philosophy with her ability to play several positions. She is a strong outfielder, but has the versatility to move into the infield and play second and third base. She brings a strong bat to the lineup and will be a gap hitter in the middle of the order. She's a quality kid, and we are very pleased to have that type of player joining our program."
Meanwhile, Fernandez, who is currently a senior at Mission Viejo High School in Mission Viejo, Calif., is a three-time all-league selection and earned first-team accolades as a junior. A standout student, Fernandez made the Principal's Honor Roll in four-straight seasons and won the California Scholarship twice. She is a member of the American Athletics travel ball program, coached by Dale Durham. Fernandez plans to study business administration and management in the School of Management.
"We are excited to have a player of Amanda's caliber coming to BU. She's an outstanding outfielder with a very strong arm," said Rychcik. "She has a very good chance of being our centerfielder for the next four years. Along with being a great athlete she is also outstanding student, entering into BU's School of Management."
The 2011 Terriers will kick-off their season in Louisville, Ky., on Feb. 25, 2011 at the Louisville Red & Black Tournament.
