CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Boston University softball team moved to 3-4 on the young season as it split its two games with Villanova and Virginia Tech on the first day of the USF Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. The Terriers defeated the Wildcats, 5-3, in the first game, but dropped their second game to the Hokies, 3-1.
In two contests, Setterlund hit .500 with two hits, including one two-bagger, which now brings her career total to 30 and she is five doubles away from breaking the all-time record at BU. Freshman Jayme Mask connected on four hits in seven at-bats through two games.
Against Villanova BU connected on nine hits - two of which came from the bats of Rentler and Engman, respectively, while Engman and Setterlund knocked in two runs. Setterlund drove in two runs on a double to left field, plating sophomore Erica Casacci and Mask on the hit.
Villanova tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with two runs on five hits; however, in the very next frame, the Terriers pulled ahead for good with two additional runs as senior Rachel Moeller singled to left center, which brought Setterlund home and two at-bats later, Engman singled to right field to plate Rentler.
After the Wildcats drew to within one in the sixth, the Terriers added one more in the seventh as Engman singled to center field, sending sophomore Kayla Kruper home and give BU the two-run victory.
Senior Cassidi Hardy struck out six batters, issued two walks and allowed three runs on eight hits, improving to 2-1 on the young season.
Against the Hokies, BU fell behind by two runs in the third and while it responded with Setterlund's sacrifice fly out to left field in the bottom half of the frame, one run in the fourth on a fielding error sealed the win for Virginia Tech.
BU will face Robert Morris and Florida International on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.
