CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Boston University softball team (4-8) dropped a pair of games to Radford, 10-8, and Ball State, 3-2, on Tuesday afternoon in Clearwater, Fla. Senior Rachel Hebert recorded a grand slam vs. the Highlanders and juniors April Setterlund and Caitlin Rentler each drove in a pair of runs on Tuesday.
Against Radford, Hebert went 3-for-4 - including a grand slam in the sixth - Rentler was 1-for-2 with two RBIs on a double and sacrifice flyout. Freshman Taylor Cowan also had a productive day in the batter's box with three hits in four at-bats vs. the Highlanders.
After falling down by four runs, the Terriers began to chip away at the deficit with runs in the second and third. In the second frame and with the bases loaded, junior Kelley Engman singled to center field, which plated Hebert and two at-bats later junior Christina Valdes singled up the middle to bring Rentler home. BU drew to within one run in the third frame as Rentler doubled down the left line and allow Setterlund to cross home plate.
Radford tacked on three more in the fifth, before Hebert tripled to center field and then scored when Rentler hit a sacrifice fly out to the same spot. One inning later, Hebert smacked a grand slam to give the Terriers the 8-7 advantage heading into the seventh.
In the top of the next inning however, Radford returned to score three unanswered runs and claim the 10-8 victory. Engman took the loss on the mound and fell to 0-3 on the season.
Against Ball State, the Terriers went up by two runs in the fourth as Setterlund drove in a pair on her team-high fourth home run of the season, plating senior Rachel Moeller - who had reached on a double to left field. Ball State responded immediately in the latter half of the frame with three runs on one hit - highlighted by Alyssa Collins' two-run double to left field. Ball Sate later added the game-winning run on a fielder's choice.
Over the final two innings, BU got on base as Valdes doubled in the sixth and Engman singled into center field in the seventh, however, Ball State's Audra Sanders recorded the final out with a strikeout to halt the rally.
Seniors Megan Currier and Cassidi Hardy shared pitching duties, with Currier suffering the loss on three runs - two earned - and five walks. She struck out two batters in 4.2 innings of work. Hardy came in for the final 1.1 innings and struck out three, while allowing two base runners.
