BOSTON -
Freshman hurler Taylor Cowan recorded her first complete-game shutout as the Boston University softball team (21-14) defeated Bryant (4-28), 4-0, on Wednesday afternoon at BU Softball Field. Senior Rachel Moeller and freshman Whitney Tuthill each recorded two hits in the win.
BU unleashed 10 hits and plated four, which included a triple from junior April Setterlund and back-to-back RBI singles from senior Caitlin Rentler and junior Christina Valdes. Sophomore Emily Roesch also drove in a run in the fifth with a double to left field.
Cowan, making her first career start and fourth appearance overall, went all seven frames, surrendering seven hits and three walks, while striking out two - including the final batter of the game.
The Terriers took advantage of a passed ball in the second inning as Tuthill came home from third to give the team a 1-0 lead. In the fourth, the Bulldogs threatened with runners on first and second; however, the BU defense turned a 5-3 double play to get out of the jam.
In the bottom of the fourth, Moeller and Tuthill pulled off the double steal and on the next at-bat Rentler singled into left field to bring home Moeller and Valdes followed up with an infield single that plated Tuthill.
In the fifth, Setterlund tripled down the right line and scored when Roesch ripped a shot down the left line for the fourth run of the game. A resilient Bryant side loaded the bases in the top of the sixth on a walk and back-to-back two-out singles; however, a pop up to Roesch at shortstop got BU out of the jam.
To close out the game, Bryant put runners on first and second; however, Cowan completed the shutout with a strikeout.
BU will return to America East action this weekend when it heads down to Baltimore, MD. to take on UMBC in a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday.
