May 7, 2010 | Softball
BOSTON - The Boston University softball team (29-19, 12-3 AE) will close out its regular season this weekend as it will host Hartford (16-22, 3-12 AE) on Saturday and Sunday in a three-game series, beginning with a single game on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Terriers are looking to secure first place and the No. 1 seed in the America East Softball Championships.
BU is two games ahead of Maine in the race for the regular-season title and the Black Bears will face third-place Stony Brook in a three-game series this weekend.
Junior April Setterlund continues to make a name for herself on the national stage as she is now just one of four athletes batting above .500 in the nation. As of May 5, Setterlund is ranked in the nation's top 10 in four categories: batting average (4th, .511), slugging percentage (4th, .943), on-base percentage (3rd, .597) and runs per game (9th, 1.13). She has set single-season school records for hits (72), doubles (17), RBIs (51) and runs (54) and has broken the career record for doubles (44).
Also playing vital roles in the batter's box this season has been senior Rachel Moeller, who is swinging at a .315 clip - a career-best - and has hit four home runs and knocked in 30 RBIs. Sophomore Erica Casacci, who hits in the two spot, has batted .288 and has crossed home 41 times, which is second on the team. Junior catcher Caitlin Rentler is hitting .286 with 30 RBIs and seven doubles, while senior Rachel Hebert owns a .281 BA with nine home runs, five doubles and 33 RBIs.
On the mound, senior Cassidi Hardy, who is one of only two pitchers in the history of the program to throw four no-hitters, has amassed 16 wins with a 2.46 ERA. She has struck out an incredible 206 batters - good for second in the America East. Joining her in the regular rotation is rookie Whitney Tuthill, who has already thrown one no-hitter in her career and has won 10 games in 22 appearances.
Following this weekend, BU will move on to the America East Softball Championships next weekend.
