TAMPA, Fla. - The Boston University softball team split its two games on the first day of the USF Under Armour Showcase. The Terriers fell to Long Island, 8-6, before rebounding with an 8-6 victory over La Salle.
With the victory, head coach Shawn Rychcik recorded his 200th career win.
In game one against LIU, senior April Setterlund was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs as she smacked a two-run homer in the fourth inning. Freshman Amy Ekart also drove in two runs against the Blackbirds on a two-run double in the first frame.
Freshman Holli Floetker was charged with the loss - her first of the season - as she gave up five earned runs and seven total on 12 hits and three walks. She struck out three batters. Sophomore Whitney Tuthill pitched the final 1.1 innings and surrendered the eighth run.
Long Island jumped out to the early 2-0 lead in the firt on an unearned run off an error and a bunt single. BU responded in the bottom half of the frame with three runs of its own. Setterlund reached on a two-bagger to left field and then scored on red-shirt freshman Chelsea Kehr's RBI single. Ekart repaid the favor to Kehr as she drove her and freshman Megan Volpano in on a double that put the Terriers up 3-2 in the first.
BU increased its lead in the fourth to 5-2 with Setterlund's two-run blast, but LIU responded in the fifth with four runs on five hits. In the sixth, the Blackbirds added one more on an RBI single. The Terriers attempted to start a rally in the sixth on Kehr's second RBI of the day, but the comeback came up short as LIU tacked on one more in the seventh to round out the scoring.
In the afternoon match-up, the Terriers rebounded with an 8-6 triumph over the Explorers. Ekart was the hero of the game as she blasted a three-run homer, while senior Caitlin Rentler added three hits with one RBI. Junior Melanie Delgado also drove in three runs on two hits.
Erin Schuppert saw time on the mound, but it was Tuthill who closed out the contest and earned her first win of the season. More information on BU's 8-6 win to come later.
BU will take on CCSU and Robert Morris tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., respectively.
