TAMPA, Fla. - On Sunday afternoon, the Boston University softball team (12-7) edged Jacksonville, 3-2, on the final day of the USF The Game Tournament in Tampa, Fla. Sophomore Whitney Tuthill and senior April Setterlund recorded two hits apiece, while sophomore Erin Schuppert earned the victory in the pitcher's circle.
Schuppert held Jacksonville to just five hits and two runs - one earned - to go along with six strikeouts and two walks. With the win, she improved to 4-0 on the season.
BU got on the scoreboard in the third as junior Erica Casacci ripped a single to center field that brought home freshman Alyssa Barsanti, however, the Dolphins responded with a run in the fourth inning to knot the game at 1-1.
Jacksonville tacked on two more runs in the fourth and seventh, respectively, before the Terriers took advantage of two costly errors by the JU defense in the bottom of the seventh. Casacci initially got on base on a fielding error to lead off the Terriers' seventh and in the next at-bat Kehr unloaded a game-tying RBI double that brought Casacci around to home and make it a 2-2 contest. After freshman Amy Ekart was intentionally walked, classmate Brittany Clendenny made JU pay as she hit a ground ball through the legs of JU's third baseman to plate the game winning score.
BU returns to the diamond on Tuesday (March 22) when it is set to host Harvard at 4 p.m. in the home opener at BU Softball Field.
NOTES: Setterlund is closing in on three more career records. She needs just seven more home runs to break Chiya Louie's record of 32 and nine more RBIs to surpass Louie's record. Additionally, the senior outfielder needs seven more runs to break the career runs record, currently held by Shayne Lotito (150).
