BOSTON - The Boston University softball team (18-10, 4-2 AE) dropped two games to Maine (14-20, 4-1 AE) on Sunday afternoon at BU Softball Field. Despite a 4-for-6 effort from freshman Brittany Clendenny and three RBIs from senior April Setterlund, the Terriers fell 8-2 in the first game and 6-1 in game two.
Clendenny recorded three singles and a double on Sunday, while Setterlund was 2-for-5 with one home run, three RBIs and one stolen base. Setterlund continues to close in on two more BU career records as she is two runs and three RBIs away from claiming them.
Juniors Melanie Delgado and Erica Casacci both recorded two hits on Sunday. Delgado was 2-for-6 with one double, while Casacci went 2-for-6 with one double and one triple.
Sophomore Whitney Tuthill was charged with the loss in game one, going 6.1 innings and allowing seven runs - five earned - on 10 hits. She struck out three and walked one batter. Sophomore Erin Schuppert pitched game two and fell to 6-2 as she gave up six runs - five earned - on six hits and five walks. She did match a season high with seven strikeouts.
In game one, Maine claimed an early 1-0 lead as it took advantage of a wild pitch and a throwing error, however, the Terriers answered back in third as Setterlund ripped a double into centerfield to plate Casacci and redshirt freshman Jayme Mask.
The lead was short-lived as the Black Bears tied it in the third and then recorded back-to-back three-run innings in the sixth and seventh to secure the victory.
In the rubber match, Maine jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but Setterlund once again tied the game as she went long for her sixth homer of the season. In the fourth, the Black Bears tacked on two more on a two-run double, while the Terriers struggled against Maine hurler Beth Spoehr, getting just one hit in the first five innings.
The Terriers attempted a rally in the seventh as Clendenny singled through the right side and Delgado smacked a double into left center field with two outs, but Spoehr forced a ground out to first base to end the game.
BU will look to regroup this week with a non-conference matchup against UMass on Wednesday (April 6) at 4 p.m. at BU Softball Field. The contest will be a rematch of last year's NCAA regional game in Amherst, Mass.
