Five members of the Boston University men's and women's tennis teams have been named ITA Scholar-Athletes, the organization announced Wednesday.
Juniors Petra Santini and Monika Mical earned their third consecutive award, while senior Bill Kring received his second. Sophomore Marcus VanBerkel and freshman Andrei Stern were first-time honorees.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).
Back in May, the NCAA recognized both tennis teams for achieving a perfect Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) score of 1,000 for the entire four-year cohort ending with the 2009-10 academic year.
On June 30, the America East released its Spring Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes student-athletes who achieved a GPA of 3.2 or greater. Junior Alex Green, sophomore Ferdinand Brunet and sophomore Alex Hallenbeck joined their three teammates on the list, while junior Stefanie Nunic and freshman Leonie-Charlotte Athanasiadis also reached the benchmark along with Mical and Santini.
