BOSTON - Boston University softball head coach Shawn Rychcik has announced the promotion of Katie Grimes to assistant coach for the 2012 season after she spent this past year as a volunteer assistant.
"I am very happy to be able to add Katie full time to our staff," said Rychcik. "She has earned the team's respect serving as a volunteer assistant and will be a huge asset to our program."
Grimes will work primarily with the pitchers and catchers, but will also serve as recruiting coordinator.
"As a four year starting catcher, she was instrumental in leading her pitching staff at Hawaii to the Women's College World Series," continued Rychcik. "I have seen her work with our pitching staff and they have really responded to her. Katie is a tremendous hire for our program and will make a huge impact with Terrier softball."
Grimes came to Boston University in 2011 after a standout four-year career at the University of Hawaii, where as a senior, the squad made its first ever appearance in the Women's College World Series. Along the way they also won the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) tournament and finished the season ranked seventh in the nation according to the NFCA. Grimes, an all-conference performer during her career, was the 2007 WAC Freshman of the Year.
Over four years, the former catcher and captain appeared in more than 200 games, including all 66 games as a senior. In her final year at Hawaii, she batted a career-best .282 behind the plate with 11 home runs, 41 RBI and a .990 fielding percentage.
