BOSTON - A two-time America East Player of the Year and recently named ITA Northeast Region Player to Watch, Boston University women's tennis senior Stefanie Nunic has received an invitation to compete at the 2011 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships.
Held October 1-9 at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., the renowned event includes 144 student-athletes from around the country, though Nunic is only one of nine from the northeast to be invited.
64 of the participants will first compete in the prequalifying draw with eight of them advancing to the qualifying singles draw, where Nunic will be waiting along with 55 other women. Nunic will need to win three matches between Oct. 4-5 to be one of the eight women to join the previously-announced 24 players in the main draw.
Nunic had an impressive junior year, recording a 20-6 record in singles and a 15-6 doubles mark with Vivien Laszloffy. The duo was earlier ranked 68th in the spring season before Laszloffy began suffering injuries. She was named the 2011 America East Championship Most Outstanding Player after helping the Terriers capture the program's 18th straight league title.
In singles, Nunic reached the quarterfinals of the 2010 ITA Regionals last November and then went on a 15-match win streak during the spring. She earned wins along the way over ranked players from Yale and Dartmouth.
