
Women's Soccer Set to Battle Binghamton on Sunday

BOSTON – With the opportunity to clinch a share of the America East regular season title, the Boston University women’s soccer team takes its seven-game winning streak to Vestal, N.Y., on Sunday (Oct. 14) to Binghamton at the Bearcats Sports Complex. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
BU stands at 10-5-1 on the season and a perfect 6-0-0 in conference action and can clinch a share of the America East regular season title with a win against Binghamton. The Terriers are seeking their sixth straight regular season title and 10th overall regular season crown.
Sunday’s match will be the 14th installment of the all-time series between the Terriers and the Bearcats with BU holding a 12-1-0 advantage. In the last match, the 2011 America East semifinal, Madison Clemens and former Terrier Brittany Heist (’12) scored their fifth goals of the season to lead BU to victory, 2-1. Binghamton’s last victory over BU was in overtime in 2004, 2-1.
BU claimed sole possession of first place in the America East with a 1-0 victory at Hartford on Thursday night. Junior Emma Clark netted the game-winning goal in the 74th minute to end Hartford’s eight-game unbeaten streak and propel BU to victory. BU enters Sunday’s game with a 30-game winning streak against conference foes.
During the Terriers’ seven-game unbeaten stretch that dates back to a 3-1 win at NC State on Sept. 20, they have outscored their opponents, 15-5, and put an impressive 52 shots on goal. On the defensive end, BU has held opposing teams to just 18 strikes on frame and shut out three teams in its last seven games.
Juniors Clemens and Clark lead a balanced BU offense. Clemens has netted seven goals for 14 points while Clark has put in four goals and dished out an assist for nine points. Sophomore Taylor Krebs leads the team in assists with five. The Terriers feature 12 different goal scorers and 15 players who have recorded at least one point.
Junior goalkeeper Andrea Green has been solid in net with 55 saves, 0.87 goals-against average and .797 save percentage in 16 starts.
Binghamton enters the contest with six-game winless streak after the Bearcats fell to Maine, 3-1 on Thursday night. Binghamton stands at 6-7-1 (0-4-1 in AE) on the season.
The Bearcats have scored 15 goals this fall by eight different players. Senior Sarah Furminger is the team’s leading offensive threat with five goals and two assists for 11 points, while classmate Brittany Walsh is second on the team with nine points (3 goals, 3 assists).
Juniors Carrie Martin and Stephanie Speirs have split time in net for the Bearcats this season allowing 15 goals and holding 3-2-0 and 2-5-0 records, respectively. Martin has saved 27 goals for a .818 save percentage and 0.78 goals-against mark. Speirs has stopped 32 shots, for a 1.34 goals-against average, and .780 save percentage.
Sarah McClellan is in her fourth season as head coach at Binghamton. She led the Bearcats to the America East semifinals in three of her four years, including a conference championship match appearance in 2009.
Following Sunday’s contest, the Terriers will travel to Hanover, N.H., to face Dartmouth in a non-conference match, on Wednesday (Oct. 17). First kick is slated for 7 p.m.
