Softball Inks Five Future Terriers for Class of 2017

BOSTON - Five student-athletes have signed Letters of Intent to join the Boston University softball team for the 2014 season, first-year head coach Kathryn Gleason announced Thursday. Representing the Class of 2017, Makinna Akers, Moriah Connolly, Melanie David, Rachel Levine and Brittany Younan mark Gleason's first recruiting haul with the Terriers.
Made up of players from five different states, the group consists of a pitcher, an outfielder, two infielders and a utility player.
"I am pleased to introduce the Boston University Softball Class of 2017," said Gleason. "They are not only strong athletes and determined students, but people of great character and values. They will step right onto the field, into the classroom and into the community and make an immediate impact. I am proud that they will represent us in the years to come and carry on the Terrier Softball traditions."

A star pitcher at Roseburg H.S. ... Also competed with the travel team, Northwest Bullets ... Earned All-League Second Team honors as a freshman and First Team accolades the following two seasons ... Also played basketball and volleyball ... Member of the National Honor Society.
Coach Gleason: "We look to Makinna to make an immediate impact in the pitching rotation, as we will lose two pitchers in the senior class this year. She has a solid foundation and will only continue to improve because of her yearning to learn and get better on the mound."

A utility player with experience in the outfield and infield at Palm Harbor ... Earned All-County honors as a freshman third baseman ... Claimed the same award in center field as a sophomore ... Helped the Clearwater Lady Bombers 18U club win the NFCA championship ... A district champion in the 100-meter hurdles and 100m sprints .... Member of the Spanish Honor Society.
Coach Gleason: "Moriah has roots here in the Massachusetts area, so she has grown up a Terrier fan. She has speed, agility and is a fierce competitor. She raises the level of play all of those around her with her enthusiasm and determination."

Played both first and third for Santiago H.S. ... An All-League First Team honoree her freshman year ... Helped lead team to the California State title as a sophomore ... Finished runner-up her junior season ... Member of the National Honor Society.
Coach Gleason: "Melanie is extremely versatile, playing at both corner positions. She hits No. 3 or 4 on her travel team, and we look to her to make an immediate impact in the offensive lineup."

A speedy outfielder at Milford H.S. ... Earned MidWatch A All-Star honors as a sophomore and junior ... Helped lead team to the Division I state title her junior season ... Recognized as a Metrowest Daily News First Team All-Star for her efforts ... Competed with the Central Mass Thunder ... Also participated in volleyball, basketball and winter track ... Named to the school's High Honor Roll.
Coach Gleason: "Rachel is an outfielder who will also bring speed to the this class. She comes from a championship program at Milford High School. Her energy, enthusiasm, and love for the game comes through each time she takes the field."

A contact hitter with quickness at Fossil Ridge H.S. ... Earned All-League First Team honors as a freshman ... Received All-Conference and All-State First Team accolades as a junior ... Received same honors this past season as a team captain ... Also played basketball her freshman and sophomore years ... An Academic All-State honoree the last two years.
Coach Gleason: "Brittany brings speed from the left side at the plate and a strong arm and range as a middle infielder. She comes from a strong travel ball program in the TC Stars, which will prepare her for the competition at the next level."
