CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Boston University softball team had its five game winning streak snapped on Wednesday, as the Terriers lost to LIU Brooklyn, 4-3. BU moves to 10-6 on the season.
Emily Roesch led the Terriers at the plate, going 3-for-3 for the game. The junior hit her team-leading third home run of the season and drove in two runs. Sophomore Megan Volpano swung for her fifth double of the season while classmate Jayme Mask and senior Erica Casacci each registered a hit.
Junior Whitney Tuthill started the game for the Terriers and lasted two and 2/3 innings while being charged with the loss. Sophomore Holli Floekter pitched the remainder of the game without allowing any runs.
The Terriers began the scoring early by posting three runs in the opening frame. With Chelsea O'Connor on base, Volpano doubled to left center field then advanced on a wild pitch while O'Connor crossed home for the first run. After sophomore Amy Ekart grounded out to shortstop, Roesch blasted a two-run homer to left field to give BU 3-0 lead and its only runs of the game.
LIU Brooklyn got on the board in the bottom of the second with a two-run homer. The Blackbirds tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third inning with another two-run homer to go ahead, 4-3.
The pitching change by the Terriers held LIU Brooklyn scoreless for the remainder of the game but the Terriers were unable to generate any offense through the remainder of the game as BU took the 4-3 loss.
The Terriers return to action on Thursday, as BU faces North Florida at 10 a.m. in Clearwater, Fla.
