
Terriers Shut Out Northern Illinois, 2-0

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Boston University softball team concluded play at The Game Tournament with a 2-0 victory over Northern Illinois in Clearwater, Fla., on Sunday morning. The Terriers improve their record to 14-8.
Junior Whitney Tuthill pitched a complete game shutout for the Terriers, allowing just one hit during the affair. Tuthill struck out four batters as she evened her record to 3-3 on the season.
Sophomore Chelsea O'Connor led the Terriers at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Junior Emily Roesch hit a double while scoring two runs and sophomore Brittany Clendenny accounted for BU's other hit.
The Terriers posted the first run of the game in the top of the third inning. With two outs, Roesch got on base with a walk. O'Connor stepped up to the plate and hit a single to center field and advanced to second on the throw. Roesch managed to round the bases on a fielding error by the pitcher to put BU up 1-0.
Both teams were held scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when the Terriers tacked on their final run. Roesch swung for a two-out double to right center and O'Connor singled through the left side, allowing Roesch to score and BU to claim the 2-0 victory.
The Terriers return to Boston after going 4-1 in both tournaments they played in during their nine-day trip to Florida. BU posted a 4-1 mark at the Under Armour Showcase held from March 9 to 11, including wins over then No. 23 Syracuse and a USC Upstate team that was receiving votes. At The Game Tournament, BU again went 4-1.
The Terriers are riding a three-game winning streak and have held their opponents scoreless in their last two affairs.
BU returns to the Northeast and heads to Smithfield, R.I. on Wednesday, March 21, to face Bryant at 4 p.m. The Terriers then host Boston College in their home opener on Thursday, March 22, at 4 p.m.
