KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Boston University softball team dropped a 7-3 decision to East Tennessee State in the first game of the University of Tennessee Tournament on Friday.
Sophomores Chelsea O’Connor and Megan Volpano each went 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in a run to lead the Terriers. Sophomore Jayme Mask went 1-for-2 with a triple and a run scored, while senior Erica Casacci also went 1-for-2 and scored a run.
BU (3-3) staked itself a 2-0 lead through the first two innings. Mask led off the first with a triple down the right field line. Two batters later, Volpano singled to left to drive in Mask and put the Terriers ahead, 1-0.
The Terriers wasted no time in the second inning to make it 2-0. Freshman Emily Felbaum led off by drawing a walk before senior Melanie Delgado singled to right center. A fielding error allowed Delgado to advance to second, but more importantly, plated Felbaum.
Schuppert got through the first two innings unscathed, but in the third a three-run home run put the Buccaneers ahead, 3-2. They added to their lead in the fourth. After the bases became loaded, Tuthill came on to relieve Schuppert, but a throwing error allowed two more runs to score to close the inning.
In the bottom half of the fourth, BU got a run back when O’Connor doubled to left field, scoring Casacci. The Buccaneers added a run in both the sixth and seventh inning to make it a 7-3 final.
BU will be back in action on Saturday when the Terriers take on Murray State. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
