BOSTON - Coming off a weekend sweep against Maine, the Boston University softball team will open its season-ending four-game road trip by visiting UConn on Thursday with first pitch set for 5 p.m. The Terriers (20-23-1) will enter the contest looking to avenge an earlier 11-8 defeat at home to the Huskies (25-24).
Back on April 3, UConn jumped out to an 8-0 lead through four innings, but BU roared back to cut the deficit to one (9-8) on junior Amy Ekart's three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth. The Huskies added two more runs in the seventh and held on for the victory.
Since that loss, the Terriers are 11-6 with reigning America East Player of the Week Jayme Mask batting .481 and recording 19 stolen bases. The junior hit .529 in six games last week and is currently two stolen bases shy of the season record (37) held by Shayne Lotito ('09). Juniors Brittany Clendenny and Megan Volpano have contributed a team-high 10 RBIs apiece, and senior Emily Roesch has added five doubles while reaching home plate 11 times.
In the circle, senior Whitney Tuthill (13-12) has made 11 appearances since the start of April and has held opponents to a .234 batting average while posting 46 strikeouts in 54.2 innings and a 2.30 ERA. Coming off her first career shutout win performance against Maine, freshman Lauren Hynes (4-6) allowed four earned runs to the Huskies in the first meeting but has a 1.78 ERA since the game with 30 strikeouts in 43.1 innings. She's held opponents to a .226 batting average.
Earning a 6-4 win at home on Tuesday against Boston College, the Huskies went 2-2 last week with a 10-6 victory over Albany and 11-1 win against Seton Hall with two losses to the Pirates. Marissa Guches leads UConn batting .386 and has 14 doubles along with 37 RBIs. Both she and Lauren Duggan (.233) tallied four RBIs apiece in the first meeting with the Terriers. Hitting .367, Kim Silva has seven of the Huskies' 40 homers and three triples, while Maddy Schiappa (.337) has 12 stolen bases on 16 attempts.
Currently holding a 4.15 ERA, Duggan (6-5) started in the circle against BU and allowed five earned runs in 3.2 innings before Kiki Saverino (15-12) pitched the final 3.1 innings and gave up three runs in the victory. She has three shutouts this season and owns a 2.78 ERA with opponents hitting .264.
Following the game, BU will conclude its final season as a member of the America East with a trip to Stony Brook. The three game series will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday (May 4) at 1 p.m.
