CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Junior Leonie-Charlotte Athanasiadis of the Boston University women's tennis team and graduate student Katie Matthews of the women's track & field team have been named 2013 America East Scholar-Athletes, the conference announced Thursday afternoon.
A committee of athletic administrators and NCAA Faculty Athletics Representatives chose an honoree in each of the eight spring championship sports. Each America East Scholar-Athlete was a starter or prominent reserve and carries a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.20. These eight student-athletes will automatically be nominated for the male and female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award recognized by the conference in late July.
Majoring in psychology, Athanasiadis repeated as the top women's tennis scholar athlete with a 3.49 GPA. A native of Haltern am See, Germany, she claimed five singles wins during the dual season, including two at the No. 3 slot, and added six more wins in doubles. Both she and teammate Jessi Linero earned a victory over a nationally ranked opponent and finished the season ranked eighth in the northeast region.
This is the second time that Matthews has been named an America East Scholar-Athlete. The Rocky Hill, Conn., native also earned the distinction this past winter during the indoor season. Named America East Woman of the Year in June, Matthews maintained a 3.94 GPA while pursuing a master's of science degree in speech-language pathology.
In addition to succeeding in the classroom, Matthews shined on the track. During the outdoor season, she finished fifth in the 10,000m run at the NCAA Championships and was named a USTFCCCA First Team All-American. Matthews also shattered her school record in the 5,000m run with a time of 15:44.19. She concluded 2013 as the first Terrier athlete, male or female, to earn three All-America selections in one calendar year.
