BOSTON - Playing its third game in five days, the Boston University field hockey team took sixth-ranked Connecticut to a shootout before ultimately coming up short against the defending national champions on Sunday afternoon at New Balance Field. The Huskies won the shootout, 2-0, to earn a 2-1 victory.
Sophomore Amanda Cassera tied the game with 6:09 left in regulation before the Terriers had to kill off 12 minutes of yellow cards in overtime to finish play tied 1-1.
The Huskies scored on their first try in the shootout while the Terriers were unable to get the ball past UConn netminder Nine Klein on their four tries before Casey Umstead clinched it for the visitors.
BU had its three-game win streak snapped and moved to 7-6 on the season. The Huskies improved to 9-2.
Umstead also opened the scoring with a redirect off a corner in the 47th minute. Charlotte Veitner assisted on the goal as her attempt from the top of the circle was tipped to the top of the net by Umstead.
Cassera's game-tying tally came on a breakaway, as the sophomore intercepted a pass and got around Klein on the right side before tucking the ball inside the far post. It was her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Valentina Cerda Eimbcke tied her career high with an impressive 10-save performance for the Terriers while Klein made two saves for UConn.
Freshman Allie Renzi picked up her team-best fourth defensive save of the season and was part of a strong effort by the Terrier defense as it held the potent UConn offense in check.
Renzi also had the lone shot by either team in the second overtime, as BU did not allow the Huskies to record a shot for the final 20 minutes of the game despite being down a player for seven minutes during the stretch due to a yellow card.
BU will return to action on Friday (Oct. 17) when it closes out a three-game homestand with a Patriot League contest against Holy Cross. Game time is set for 7 p.m. There will be a pregame ceremony honoring head coach Sally Starr for reaching the 400-win mark at BU.
